Week 2 completed – 14 weeks of mini pledges

TeaThe challenge for week two was to drink only “real” beverages, i.e. coffee, tea, water, and milk (only naturally sweetened with a little honey or 100% pure maple syrup). One cup of juice was allowed throughout the week, and wine (preferably red) was allowed in moderation (an average of one drink per day).

By fortunate happenstance I was given a wonderful selection of teas at Xmas by my sister and pen pal, so I had plenty to choose from – so much so that making a cuppa almost became a dilemma – which to choose?

As I’m breastfeeding Button and I’m not a big drinker (and I only like white wine anyway), I didn’t bother with the wine, and water has been my go-to drink for some time, but there were a couple of other difficulties…

I recently switched from cows’ milk to nut milks – initially it was to see if it would alleviate Button’s gassiness (it didn’t really make any difference) but I stayed with it because I like the taste. However, my favourite hazelnut milk is slightly sweetened with sugar, and the unsweetened almond milk I like was sold out at the supermarket, so milk as a drink was pretty much out. It also meant I had to pinch some of hubby’s regular cows’ milk for my tea (which I take semi-strong with just a drop of milk and no sugar). It also meant coffee was right out because I really do need just a small spoon of sugar in that. I drink decaff, so withdrawal wasn’t a problem, but I really missed my morning cup of coffee – I know it’s psychosomatic, but I don’t really feel fully awake unless I have my coffee! The nut milk was only used for making my porridge this week.

I’m also still doing the January green smoothie challenge, so I eeked out my small allowance of fruit juice to make a few smoothies and then used coconut milk for the remaining days.

I did, however, make it to the end of the week. I missed my coffee too much to carry on with this particular part of the challenge permanently, but I will be taking more notice of what I’m drinking.

  1. Oh well done! I don’t like tea or coffee, so I would have struggled with this particular challenge. I’m more of a hot chocolate kind of girl, but that wouldn’t have helped with my diet! Hazelnut milk is amazing, don’t you think? Tastes like Nutella 🙂

Got something to say?
